February is Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight often-overlooked conditions affecting these important parts of the digestive system, including gallstones.
While many people with gallstones have no symptoms, when they do cause problems, it’s important to recognize the signs that require emergency care. At Monroe County Hospital, our 24/7 Emergency Department is here to help you manage urgent gallbladder issues safely and quickly, close to home.
What Are Gallstones?
Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder, a small organ that helps digest fats. They can range in size and may block the bile ducts, causing sudden and serious symptoms.
5 Signs It’s Time to Visit the ED for Gallstones
If you experience any of the following symptoms, it may be time to seek emergency medical care:
1. Sudden, intense pain in the upper right abdomen
Pain that comes on quickly and doesn’t go away may indicate a blocked bile duct.
2. Nausea and vomiting with abdominal pain
Gallstone attacks often include digestive upset that doesn’t resolve on its own.
3. Fever and chills
This could be a sign of a gallbladder infection (cholecystitis), which can become serious if untreated.
4. Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
This may suggest a gallstone is blocking the bile duct, a medical emergency.
5. Dark urine or pale stools
Changes in the color of urine or stool may also indicate a blockage or bile flow problem.
