Just a year ago, the future of Monroe County Hospital (MCH) was in serious doubt. Struggling with years of financial losses, falling morale, and a declining reputation, the hospital was on the verge of closure. Today, it’s a different story—one of revival, commitment, and a bold vision for the future of health care in Monroe County.
Thanks to a transformational partnership with Aletheia Health Partners (AHP), Monroe County Hospital has made a 180° turnaround in just 12 months, and now its leadership is exploring a comprehensive remodel to better serve the community.
A Vital Resource Rescued
Monroe County Hospital is the only hospital in Forsyth, Georgia and is a critical access hospital (CAH) for more than 30,000 residents. When Aletheia Health Partners took over management in 2023, the challenges were steep: dwindling staff morale, outdated equipment, and the looming threat of closure.
But the mission was clear: put patients first, support hospital staff, and optimize the facility for long-term success. AHP’s proven “Three Ps” strategy – Patients, People, Property – became the foundation of that turnaround.
A Year of Record Growth
In the first fiscal year under Aletheia’s leadership, Monroe County Hospital not only stabilized – it thrived:
- Emergency Room Visits reached a record 10,753, a 5.2% increase.
- Swing Bed usage, crucial for rehab and transitional care locally, grew 21.4%.
- CT scans, ultrasounds, lab tests, and blood usage all rose significantly, indicating higher patient trust and use of services.
- Operating profit, for the first time in over seven years, turned positive.
- Contract labor costs were slashed nearly in half, freeing resources for long-term investment.
Commitment to Care and Community
This isn’t just a story of survival. It’s one of exceptional growth and revitalization. Aletheia and Monroe County Hospital’s leadership has worked closely with the staff to improve morale, update pay scales, and introduce benefits that reflect their commitment to their people. From improved HR services to hospital-wide appreciation events like Easter egg hunts and tree lightings, the hospital has rebuilt trust from the inside out.
In patient care, Monroe County Hospital achieved new benchmarks in emergency care quality, reduced unnecessary transfers, and earned prestigious accreditations across multiple departments. From pediatric ER readiness to upgraded diagnostic technology, care has improved across the board.
Property Improvements and a Vision Forward
With equipment upgrades, new lab and kitchen installations, and an updated hospital exterior, MCH has made visible improvements across the property. But leadership isn’t stopping there. An empty building in front of the hospital has already been cleared, signaling the beginning of something much bigger. Two facility improvement plans are under consideration:
Plan A: A remodel of the current hospital plus a second-floor addition to separate inpatient and outpatient services more efficiently.
Plan B: A comprehensive first-floor remodel with expanded service areas and a new main entrance.
Both options are designed to modernize care, improve the patient experience, and provide space for the growing healthcare needs of Monroe County. While there are many decisions to be made regarding moving forward with the potential remodel and expansion, the leadership team is committed to quality care for the residents of this area for now and in the future.
Why This Matters
Access to local, high-quality healthcare is about more than convenience—it’s about survival. Hospitals are economic workhorses for small communities, supporting jobs, attracting employers, and allowing families to stay close to home during times of illness or injury. A revitalized Monroe County Hospital means healthier families, a stronger local economy, and a brighter future for Forsyth and its neighboring communities.
Staying Informed
As the hospital board meets with the county commission to begin discussions around this proposed remodel, Monroe County Hospital remains committed to transparency, service, and progress. This conversation is just the beginning of a thoughtful process to shape healthcare delivery for the next generation.
From nearly closing to record-setting growth, Monroe County Hospital is a story of what’s possible when leadership, staff, and community come together with a shared purpose: to care for their own.
