The Emergency Services Nurse Manager is responsible for the delivery of nursing services in the Emergency Department. In collaboration with facility Administration, allocates department resources in an efficient and economic manner to enable the highest standard of patient care. Collaborates with other departments, medical professionals, consultants, and organizations, to develop, support, and coordinate patient care and related administrative functions.

- Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the Emergency Department, as well as its programs and activities, in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that conform to current standards of nursing practice and operational policies while maintaining compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
- Develop, maintain, and periodically update written policies and procedures for the day-to-day functions of the emergency department.
- Develop, maintain, and periodically update Emergency department procedures.
- Communicates and interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff and monitors staff practices and implementation.
- Evaluates the work performance of all emergency nursing personnel and implements discipline according to policies and procedures.
- Ensures delivery of compassionate, quality care and nursing supervision as evidenced by adequate services and staff coverage on unit.
- Coordinates emergency services with all other departments.
- Collaborates with physicians, community agencies and institutions to improve the quality of services and to resolve identified problems.
- Oversees nursing schedules to ensure they meet patient needs and regulatory and budgetary standards.
- Participates in the recruitment and selection of nursing personnel and ensures sufficient staff are hired.
- Oversees and supervises development and delivery of in-service education to equip nursing staff with sufficient knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, quality care for patients.
- Proactively develops positive employee relations; promotes teamwork, mutual respect, and effective communications.
- Monitors staff for compliance with facility polices on workplace safety.
- Coordinates and/or develops on-going quality assurance activities for Emergency department to monitor compliance with standards and regulatory requirements through rounds, interviews, and record reviews. Compiles summary of findings for the Quality Assurance committee.
- Participates in budget development for the emergency department. Assures nursing staff properly charges out ancillaries used.
- Helps prepare staff for inspection surveys, instructing staff on matters of conduct and disclosure, being interviewed by inspectors, immediate corrections of problems noted by surveyors. Reviews and reinforces important standards previously cited.
- Participates in the preparation of the Plan or Correction response to an inspection survey, and implements any follow-up QA required for any nursing allegations.
- Communicates directly with patients, families, medical staff, nursing staff, interdisciplinary team members, and department heads to coordinate care and services. Promotes participation in care plans and maintains a high quality of care for patients.
- Promotes customer service, hospitality, responds to, and adequately resolves complaints or concerns from patients or families about emergency services.
- Promotes compliance with accident prevention procedures, safety rules, and safe work practices to prevent employee injury and illness and control workers’ compensation costs.
- Ensures staff is trained in fire and disaster and other emergency procedures and evaluates performance during drills.
- Works emergency room shifts as needed to ensure adequate coverage:
- Collects current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
- Performs triage, while considering both the physical and psychosocial elements.
- Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocols.
- Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
- Records patient’s current vital signs.
- Works directly under physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing and treatments.
- Prepares, administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV), and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.
- Provides IV therapy.
- Cleans and bandages wounds.

- Reports any suspected abuse to appropriate agencies.
- Initiates patient education plan as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury by explaining post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment.

This position is responsible for the direct supervision of the all RNs and LPNs in the Emergency Department. This position’s responsibilities include: interviewing, hiring, and training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday; hours are flexible based on the job duties demand. Evening and weekend work may be required based on the needs of the position/job duties.
This position requires administrative “on call” responsibilities to be rotated within nursing management team.
This position may require some travel. Travel may be outside the local area and overnight.
Required Education and Experience:
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing in the state of Georgia; valid license as Registered Nurse in the state of Georgia.
- Current, valid AHA Healthcare Provider training (BCLS and ACLS).
- Experience in emergency nursing services within hospital environment.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Advance nursing degree; Masters preferred.
- At least five years management experience preferred.
- Prefer TNCC/CEN certifications.
