Monroe County Hospital Named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s 100 Critical Access Hospitals to Know for 2026

Monroe County Hospital has been named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s 100 Critical Access Hospitals to Know for 2026, a prestigious national list recognizing critical access hospitals that are expanding service lines, embracing technological innovation, and meaningfully reducing how far patients must travel to receive both general and specialty care.

In the most remote parts of the country, critical access hospitals stand as essential pillars of care. Though small by definition, their reach is profound. Offering round-the-clock emergency services with no more than 25 inpatient beds, these institutions are purpose-built to bring quality healthcare directly to the communities that need it most. The Becker’s Hospital Review editorial team accepted nominations and curated the list to highlight the great work of critical access hospitals across the nation.

Monroe County Hospital’s inclusion reflects a remarkable transformation since 2023, when the hospital chose independence from a large health system and partnered with Aletheia Health Partners to chart a new course for healthcare in Monroe County.

A Turnaround Story Rooted in Community

Since regaining independence, Monroe County Hospital has achieved milestones that few rural hospitals accomplish in such a short time:

•  Record emergency department volumes, reflecting a surge in patient confidence and expanded community access to care.

•  A 40% increase in its swing bed program over 18 months, allowing more patients to recover close to home and family.

•  Positive profit margins for the first time in seven years, driven by strengthened community relations, expanded marketing efforts, and improved staff morale.

•  Upgraded radiology equipment and additional outpatient and specialty services brought to campus.

•  Completed pediatric readiness training for nursing staff, ensuring the hospital is prepared to serve patients of every age.

•  Named 2025 “Hospital of the Year” by Hometown Health, recognizing excellence among Georgia’s rural hospitals.

Leadership Rooted in Forsyth

In January 2026, Monroe County Hospital appointed a new Chief Executive Officer — Casey Fleckenstein, a nurse who has dedicated her entire career to Monroe County Hospital and is deeply rooted in the Forsyth community. Her appointment reflects the hospital’s commitment to servant leadership and the conviction that those who know the community best are best equipped to lead it.

Looking Ahead: Growth and Investment

Monroe County Hospital is currently in the process of reopening its operating room and is actively exploring options for overall hospital renovations or the construction of a new facility in order to expand care access for the surrounding community for generations to come.

“Being named to Becker’s 100 Critical Access Hospitals to Know is a testament to every member of our team who believed in this hospital’s future when we chose to stand on our own,” said Casey Fleckenstein, CEO, Monroe County Hospital. “We are proud of how far we have come and energized by how much further we can go for the people of Monroe County.”

Monroe County Hospital remains committed to being the healthcare choice for Forsyth and the surrounding region and delivers compassionate, high-quality care close to home. For more information, visit monroehospital.org.
