Small Steps, Big Health: Your August Wellness Guide from Monroe County Hospital

Too often, “getting healthy” sounds like an all-or-nothing overhaul — new diet, new gym membership, new you by Monday. But real, lasting wellness doesn’t work that way. It’s built in the quiet, ordinary moments: a ten-minute walk after dinner, a glass of water before your morning coffee, a conversation with someone you love.

This August, Monroe County Hospital is celebrating National Wellness Month by focusing on small, steady choices that add up over time.

Move Your Body — Any Way That Counts

Exercise doesn’t have to mean an hour at the gym. A walk around the block, stretching during a commercial break, or taking the stairs all count. The goal is simply to move more than you did yesterday. Even 20–30 minutes of moderate activity most days can lower your risk of heart disease, improve your mood, and give you more energy throughout the day.

Start simple: pick one time of day to move, and protect it like an appointment.

Prioritize Sleep Like It’s Medicine

Because it is. Adults need 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night, yet many of us treat it as optional. Poor sleep is linked to higher stress, weakened immunity, and increased risk of chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

This week, try one small shift: set a consistent bedtime — even on weekends — and put your phone down 30 minutes before you turn in. Your body will thank you.

Stay Connected to the People Around You

Wellness isn’t just physical. Loneliness and social isolation are real health risks, associated with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and even cardiovascular disease. Meaningful connection like a phone call, a shared meal, a few minutes of genuine conversation can do more for your health than you might expect.

Make it a point this month to reach out to someone you’ve been meaning to check in on.

Manage Stress Before It Manages You

Chronic stress takes a serious toll on the body. But you don’t need a meditation retreat to get it under control. Deep breathing, a short walk, journaling, even stepping away from a screen for five minutes are all small resets add up. Identify one stress trigger in your daily routine and experiment with one simple strategy to address

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

At Monroe County Hospital, we’re here for your health at every step,  not just when something goes wrong. This August, we encourage you to take a proactive approach and start with one small change. Then another. Wellness isn’t a destination — it’s a direction.
