The Swing Bed Program at Monroe County Hospital
The Swing Bed Program is a service provided for patients who require sub-acute care, such as physical therapy and speech therapy. This service is provided by the nursing and other auxiliary staff. In many cases, this program can be an excellent alternative to nursing home placement.
Examples of patients who require this level of care include those in need of IV therapy or IV medications, sterile dressing changes, wound care, physical therapy, and several other types of skilled care.
The Swing Bed Program is a federally approved program for small rural hospitals. It is designed to be short term, with discharge options being explored as an ongoing process by your physician and the staff of Monroe County Hospital. The discharge planner will begin discussing options for discharge upon the patient's arrival, and will work closely with the patient and their family to assist in making the decision based on individual needs. The length of stay is generally two weeks; however, we can work with the patient and family to ensure their comfort at the time of discharge, or make arrangements if continued stay is needed.
The criteria for qualifying for Monroe County Hospital’s Swing Bed Program:
 The patient requires skilled services that must be provided by or under the supervision of professional or technical personnel.
Services are provided on a daily basis.
The patient has a 3-day acute care admit prior to the
Swing Bed admission.
Medicare and some insurance plans are accepted. We will contact the patient's insurance carrier prior to acceptance, to ensure the Swing Bed service will be covered, and we will also precert for the patient. The patient and family are responsible for assuring that the financial obligations of his/her healthcare are fulfilled as promptly as possible.
