Gale V. "Buzz" Tanner Scholarship


The Hospital Authority has created an endowed scholarship in the name of Gale V. “Buzz” Tanner. Monroe County Hospital will award a scholarship each year to an individual who has chosen to enter into a healthcare career that will improve the health status of Monroe Countians.

The fund is created by the Authority in honor of Buzz Tanner’s loyal 12-year service to the hospital as Administrator and as a testament to his lifelong activities to improve the lives of others.

Selection of the annual award winner will be based on elements to include the applicant’s indication of intent to return to work in healthcare in Monroe County, career field chosen and its relevance to healthcare needs in Monroe County, financial needs, academic achievements, and community activities.

Applications will be accepted through the month of March each year and the award recipient will be announced during National Hospital Week in May. Applications can be obtained from Administration at the hospital or online at www.monroehospital.org.

Mr. Tanner was the Administrator of the Monroe County Hospital from 1992 to 2004, and is currently the Director of Communications and Business Development of Community Health Works in Forsyth. Prior to 1992, Mr. Tanner was involved in healthcare management at Middle Georgia Hospital in Macon and at the South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel, MS.

Mr. Tanner holds a Master of Science in Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia, Master of Arts from the University of Southern Mississippi and a cum laude BS degree from the University of Mississippi. He lives in Forsyth with his son, Justin.
