 Diabetes Education Programs

Monroe County Hospital offers a comprehensive diabetes education program led by Certified Dietary Manager, Cindy Renno, and Nursing Educator, Mamie Patterson LPN. The physicians and educators work closely setting up a treatment plan committed to providing ways for improved diabetes management. The following services are designed to support people with diabetes in leading healthier lives.
Services include:
Inpatient Nutritional Education
Individualized diet counseling includes basic nutritional requirements and portion control as related to blood sugar control. Videos on diabetes are made available for viewing by the patient and family members.
Inpatient Disease Management Education
Individualized demonstration and instruction of the use of a glucometer to measure blood sugar and instruction of the prescribed blood sugar lowering medications, oral and insulin.
Outpatient Nutritional Counseling and Glucose Monitoring
One on one nutritional counseling and self glucose monitoring by appointment. Physician referral required.
Outpatient Disease Management Education Classes
On the second Thursday of every month at 1:00 PM this class meets in the Hospital Dining Room and includes group counseling on stress management, instruction on monitoring blood sugar level and use of blood sugar lowering medications. The importance of diet, exercise, and medication is emphasized.
Diabetes Support Group
Informative topics on current diabetes care, fellowship, and refreshment are offered through the Diabetes Support Group. The meeting is scheduled for the first Tuesday of every month at 6 PM in the Hospital Dining Room, is free, and open to anyone who has diabetes, family members, and friends with diabetes.
Diabetes 10,000 Steps A Day Program
By gradually increasing steps to 10,000 steps a day, diabetes management improves. Weight loss, lower blood pressure and cholesterol control occurs. This program is a part of the Diabetes Support Group.
